Thanks to all for your responses. Christopher Baker indicated that I must
put the full path of the cdrom that has the .toc file on it. That path is
/cdrom/usr/sys/inst.images. I can now see the contents of the cdrom and
select the packages I need.

Where you entered "/cdrom" you need to enter the subdirectories (full path
name) to where the ".toc" is on the CD. Then it will work because you
don't have to create a new .toc there.

Bill thanks. That did the trick. Now maybe I am not doing this the
correct
way. I am able to mount the CD now. What I want to do is install some
base
level software from the remote CD. When I do smitty installp and enter
/cdrom as the input directory, it takes me to the next screen. I then do
an
F4 to list the files so I can select specific base level software. When I
do this then I get an error that it cannot create the .toc on /cdrom
because
it is read only. Is there anyway to install AIX software from a remote
CDrom? I tried to copy to a directory for a installation later but I get
the same .toc error.

Greetings,
Thanks for the response on the base level packages. The are indeed on the
installation CD's. I do have another question. I have a remote RS6000 F50
that I am doing the ML updates that I need to access the CD on a local
machine (RS6000 43P 150). I mounted the cd on the local machine. made the
entry in /etc/exports as follows

/cdrom -root=frodo,ro

I then did an exportfs -a

On the remote machine I enter the command mount frodo:/cdrom /cdrom
and I get the following error:

Current Directory=[/]

schnucDR> mount frodo:/cdrom /cdrom

mount: 1831-010 server frodo not responding: RPC: 1832-019 Program not
registere
d

mount: retrying

frodo:/cdrom

I checked /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/netsvc.conf, and /etc/hosts to see if I
had
anything wrong it these files. /etc/hosts contained the entry fro the
system frodo. I there something that I am doing wrong.

Thanks,
