You would probably be better off just setting up you new box as a
primary (You can have 2 primary servers, you just have to make updates
to each of them when you add/change something).

It also makes a difference what software you use. I assume you are
looking at BIND since that is usually the defacto standard. Before you
make any final decisions on BIND (if you have a choice), I really
recommend taking a look at djbdns. Just about everyone that has tried
djbdns and has any experience with BIND will tell you that they will
never use BIND again if they have any choice at all.
