SUMMARY: login incorrect message

Well I've not received any responses yet but we've solved the problem.

FYI here's the synopsis:-

Problem:
The problem was that when some users attempted to login they got the error message "login incorrect" even though their passwords were correct and had not expired.

The system:
Model: AS 4100
Serial Number: NI83206670
O/S: Tru64 4.0F
Patch Kit: DUV40FB18AS0007-20020102
Using Enhanced Security

Solution:
We created a new user using a customised UNIX script that is always used for that purpose. The script apparently updated the user files and corrected whatever problem existed.

Also please note the user files were in the /tcb/files/auth directory and NOT /etc/auth as I had previously stated.

Other Attempts:
Before requesting assistance, we had previously tried resetting the affected users' passwords but got the message "unknown user". We also tried "su - <username>" from root which also gave the "unknown user" message. Rebooting the system also did not work. "autochk" returned a list of all the affected users' accounts with the message "<username> appears in Protected Password database but cannot be retrieved with getprpwent()".

We're currently experiencing a problem whereby some of our users are unable to login to the UNIX server. The specs of the server are as follows:

Running the "autochk" command gives us the following message for all users who are unable to login:

We're using Enhanced Security so the usernames are not in the passwd file, but rather in a separate file for each user in the /etc/auth directory. A comparison of the files of users who are unable to login and those that still are does not show any visible differences.

Any assistance that can be given us would be greatly appreciated.
