This list really rocks.....within 5 mins I had all the
replies needed to isolate my problem.

I opened up the 4100, took out the problem CPU1 board,
and moved CPU4 into its slot. I am booted now, running
OK with 3 CPUs. I even received overnight quotes
already for the part, in under 5 mins!!!!!
This particular box was not on maintanance.....
I will respond separately to the hardware quotes.

Thanks all once again

Its a $10 fan from HP spareparts, had a customer with
same problem in
november.
If you just open up the box and remove CPU1, the one
with the stopped
fan ;-), dont forget the antistatic wrist wrap. Then
continue booting
up, then check partnumber of fan and order at HP or
find equivalent at
the nearest fan shop.

The part number is one of these. You need to lift off
the top and
check.:
SYSTEM: 301AA\301AB\301AC\301AD, AlphaServer 4100
5/300E and
SYSTEM: 51JRA\51JRB\51JSB, Alphaserver 4000 LP 533MHz

Fan, 60mm DC Tube Axial *CPU Fan
12-49995-01

This is the other type of fans in the box, three of
them next to the
motherboard and PSU's:
( Fan, 4.5in. DC Thermal Speed Controlled
12-23609-21)

Fan fail is common on AS4100 CPUs

The fan has a speed sensor. Even if the fan is
working, if it is slower
than expected by the fan tach module on the PCM, the
CPU will be marked
bad and the system will power off.

You need either to pull the bad CPU card and boot with
3 CPUs only, or
try cleaning out the bad fan with a vacuum. Note that
most usually the
reason for underspeed is failed bearings on the fan,
so using a light
oil such as WD40 can help things temporarily.

Also note that the fans are not standard. They are
modified versions
of Delta AFB0612HA DC fan which have a different
output signal, and
the standard off-the-shelf fans will not work as
replacements so you
do need to get the OEM version from HP.
