I received one reply from Steve VanDevender.
Steve agreed with my theory that it probably wasn't related to sendmail
and suggested a problem with termcap/terminfo. He also urged me to
upgrade both pico and pine.
Since posting the message I have not been able to duplicate the problem.
This suggests to me a path or environment variable, which got set during
the installation of sendmail.
Bruce.

If I try to create a new mail message from within pine I get a segmentation fault and core dump. The problem appears to be pico, because if I run pico itself I get the same result. Sendmail may not be a factor except that I noticed the problem after installing 8.12.10. Pine/pico are relatively old - 4.04 - but have run fine until now.
