Hi

I asked if Oracle 8.1.7 runs on the old Alpha EV4.5 processors.
Received 7 mails in 30 minutes (wow!) and the consensus was: No, but ...

FYI heres the reply from Jan Noring as a summary:

Hi,
This is from Oracle Metalink:
The Following are the Minimum requirements .

Memory : A minimum of 128 MB RAM is required to install Oracle8i products.
Oracle8i Client products require 64 MB of RAM .
Swap Space : Twice the amount of RAM or at least 400 MB, whichever is
greater, is recommended for most systems.
CD-ROM Device : A CD-ROM drive supported by Compaq Tru64 UNIX is required.
Oracle uses ISO 9660 format CD-ROM disks with RockRidge extensions.

Oracle8i Release 3 (8.1.7) requires a system with an Alpha processor EV 5.6
or later.

Installation Type Required Disk Space
Typical : 1250 MB
Minimal : 1050 MB
Custom : Up to a maximum of 1500 MB
For more details please consult the documentation in the Release CDROM .

 /Jan Noring

Karen Y. Byrd and Billy Barnett said that they got it
running on old alphas but very very slow. "Not even usable"

>From earlier installations on Alphas with EV5 Procs I know
that it works on them, but also very slow because it runs
on an emulation of the EV5.6.

Thanks to:

and special thanks to Andy Cohen who sent me
some interesting docs, too.

Harald
