I received many replies... to many to mention them all explicitly. However
I'd like to thank all of you for taking the time to reply to my question.
The answer is: "hacking and slashing" at the /sbin/rc?.d directories is,
in fact, the most appropriate way to proceed. I haven't decided exactly
which variant I will follow but I may move the S??sendmail link into a
subdirectory to get it out of the way while at the same time keeping it
around in case I need it later.
Thanks again!
