Thank you to all who replied!

Many pointed out dsfmgr, which provided the solution.

Special thanks to:
Paul L. Wilson who recommended "dsfmgr -K" which creates all
device special files for components the system detects.
Shiva Gowda who recommended "dsfmgr -V -F -v" which corrects
errors in the /dev tree.

I tried both versions on a test machine. Both did the job.
"-V -F -v" tells what is wrong, "-K" just creates the files.
