Non-default broadcast address under Solaris 8

Hi sunmamangers,

I often found appropriate solutions for my problems in your archives, but
not for this simple looking
one. I need to configure a network interface on a machine running Solaris 8
with the following values:

inet: 192.168.200.112
netmask: 255.255.240.0
broadcast: 192.168.200.255 (!!!)

This broadcast address fits the former netmask of 255.255.255.0 but has not
been modified when
extending the net ... . The other UNIX machines in the network work just
fine and I have to make an
E6500 work there as well.

I may configure the interface easily with

# ifconfig ge1 inet 192.168.200.112 netmask 255.255.240.0 broadcast
192.168.200.255

but as soon as I take the interface up the broadcast address is
automatically set to 192.168.207.255

# ifconfig ge0 inet 192.168.200.112 netmask 255.255.240.0 broadcast
192.168.200.255 up

also doesn't work and the use of the /sbin or /usr/sbin version of ifconfig
doesn't make any difference
here. I remember that using non-default broadcast addresses was possible
either with Solaris 2.6 or
2.5.1 and wonder if this "syntax" check in Solaris 8 could be turned off in
some way.

Any help and any possible workaround is more than just welcome. This is (of
course) very important
and (again of course) very urgent.

Thanks a lot in advance

Marc
