SunFire F6800, four domaines and the Media Tray story.

Hello All,

We're getting ready to get a bunch of F6800's.

I'd like to know how others are doing with the F6800 servers and the number
of domains that you are using on such platforms. More specifically, I'd like
to know what choices you (or SUN) made when deciding what to pick for the
boot disks. I'm quite puzzled by the answer that Sun Europe gave me when I
asked about four domaines in an F6800. Here's a small recap:

- If you have an F6800 with one domain, you get a D240 Mediatray and it fits
in the SunFire F6800 cabinet on top of the server itself. A D240 in this
configuration includes 1 DVD-ROM, 1 DDS4 and two 18GB disks.
- for two domains you get two D240 mediatrays.
- for hree domains you get three D240 mediatrays.
But if you want to grow to four domains, here's the procedure (from SUN):
take one D240 out; put the other two D240's in split-bus mode, get a rack to
fit four unipacks into the SunFire cabinet and use the unipacks as mirrors
of the D240 disks. Also, a side-effect is that one domain in two gets the
DDS4 while the other gets the DVD-ROM. Not exactly orthogonal or scalable
(you can't just add a D240 to grow from three to four domaines, you have to
disrupt operation of -ALL- of the other domains because you're moving the
mirror boot disks to the unipacks).

So here are my questions:
- How do you people do it if you want four domains in an F6800? Does your
experience differ? Also, it appears that there is some empty space
underneath the server just above the RTS/RTU power modules.. is it not
possible to fit a D240 in there? Does anyone know why space is tight above
the server and some is left empty under it?

Our solution is that we'll never use four domains on an F6800, we'll max out
at three and we'll use D240's as needed.

Regards,

Vincent
