Follow-up: 2 Nics on an E4500 - hme0 and hme1

Hi all,

Many thanks to all who replied namely:)
-Graham Wood
-Aaron M. Hirsch
-Timon, John
-Nathan W. Lindstrom
-Rik Schneider
-Zaigui Wang
-neal pressman

and many more.

Facts:
-E4500 with 2 NICs
-The ips used for both hme1 and hme0 are different.
-Both hme0 and hme1 are on the same network segment.
-For this network, I have a class B address.

The problem was first narrowed down to the MAC
address.

arp -a | grep SP showed that both hme0 and hme1 had
the same MAC address which I was told is standard for
an E4500. I checked this against other E4500's and
rightly so!

I resorted to modify the MAC address for hme1 as
follow:

hme0-->8:0:20:92:aa:c1
hme1-->8:1:20:92:aa:c1

Also, the first 3 fields are 8:0:20 for all
E4500's..the last 3 are derived from the hostid.

Nathan had me check the following:
"Run: eeprom local-mac-address\?

If it returns "local-mac-address?=false", then you
need to change it:

Run: eeprom local-mac-address\?=true

And then reboot.

See
http://www.eng.auburn.edu/users/doug/howtos/multipathing.html
for more
details.

I did apply the changes using the eeprom command and
sadly, cannot reboot the system for now. hme0 and its
aliases are running live services. Downtime needs to
be approved:)

We would also expect no to have to reboot. use eeprom
command and change would be effective at next reboot.
Instead, use ifconfig (although not recommended) to
tweak the MAC address to get it to work.

I did use ifconfig too to tweak the second and third
field to test this.

No joy for now. No other servers can see hme1.

Also added /etc/notrouter as suggested. Is this to be
an empty file just?

So much joy for a friday morning :))

Again comments welcome and thanks to all,

Alex/
