Slow telnet response

I have a couple of Sun machines @ Solaris 9 that respond very slowly to
telnet. If I put the hostname & IP address of the machine I am
telnetting from into the local hosts file it is almost instantaneous.

These machines were built by a former colleague.

Any ideas?
