Well,
the culprit -was- the /etc/hosts file damaged in a mysterious way
by my fat fingers. Restoring it from backup and re-editing with the
changes did the trick. On additional testing I discovered that removing
some entries for a no longer existing network caused the problem. I'll
investigate it a bit further, because on the face of it, it makes no
sense.
Thanks to Bill Hassel and James Perry for helpful hints.
