[HPADM] passwd file problems - /sbin/sh

Greetings,

We have several systems running hpux 11.00 and have the same config
files such as passwd, group, nsswitch.conf, etc. Earlier today one of
the systems started to act strange and acted like it couldn't read the
passwd file. It would give errors like:

Dec 15 17:00:13 macaw inetd[4817]: getpwnam: root: No such user

It would do the same for user bin, sys, etc.

The nsswitch.conf has "compat" after the passwd entry. This was a
change made about a week ago from "files nis". We found that when this
started to occur, we could go in and modify the local password file in
any way, and then it would work for 5-10 minutes and then start up
again. We switched back to the "files nis" entry in nsswitch.conf, and
this seemed to make almost everything happy.

We then found that when using /sbin/sh, that it would not cd to nis
homes such as "cd ~username". This did work is using ksh. We do not
run nis+.

We're assuming that the first issue was some type of fluke and not
related to the second, but don't know for sure. The other systems that
are set up like this have the same /sbin/sh (ll, cksum, etc) and don't
have this problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jeff Cleverley
