So far so good (well, getting better) the device will be replaced by HP, the
tape itself is lost for its data storage purpose.
Since the ribbon is nice curly and such, it looks nice to have the kids (age
4, 5 and such) tinker with it. Is there any reason not to let them play with
it? Or should I regard the tape as chemical waste?

After pressing the unload button, the tape appears to be rewind (that's according to the sound of the device) but after a while (start of tape?) the lights all go back to flashing mode. Operating the handle seems to crach stuff so that is to be avoided. `mt offline` reports "device busy" The last known action on the device is last nights backup. That once crashed near the end of the backup so it might have hit the end of the tape. This crashed backup is a dump of a file from a remote machine. At the machine with the tape drive, there is a `dd` process that changes the blocksize of this file. This process is gone hence the tape shoule be free. In the past, I've had similar problems with old hardware and both 10.20 and 11.0. This old machine had to be rebooted to be able to eject the tape. Due to the nature of the current problem machine, this reboot is not acceptable. What is happening with the tape device? How can I stop it now and eject the tape? How can I avoid it in the future? System at hand: L-class and N-class hardware, HP-UX 11.0, DLT tape device Previous problem machines: D-class hardware, HP-UX 10.20 and 11.0, dds tape device CBee -- C.
