To summarize:
I fixed the problem. Thanks to the folks who offered suggestions (Jim
Langston & Steve Illgen).
Everything with the cold install and the operating system was fine. In
fact, reducing shmmax
had nothing to do with the problem.
I began to believe that we either had something corrupted or we would
have to reload the Oracle software. The errors were those ora-7445 and
ora-3113, that lead you down a path with no 'real' direction.
Before going through the headache of re-installing the software...I
decided to re-copy the oracle mountpoint from a different tape....(we
had planned to do a vgimport, but unfortunately the original disk died
on us..so we had to use a new disk...). We had copied from the tape we
had made just prior to doing the cold-install, but again something was
not 'perfect' there.
After the tape restore from the other tape......WE WERE BACK IN
BUSINESS....DB UP-DB DOWN and everyone is happy.
My tip of the week.....Make duplicate tape backups before you start
!!!!!!!

Upgraded K370 - 1.7gb RAM
Was 11.0 with 3 databases/Oracle 8.0.5
Now 11i with 3 databases/Oracle 8.0.5
All the above ran fine under HPUX 11.0.
Did a cold-install to 11i. Went ok. Got everything back and was
reasonably happy. Still not adjusted to these new parms for 11i, but
used my old settings as a basis to set kernel parms..the box comes up
fine and everything from O/S standpoint seems OK (backups
working, cron working, etc...etc...).
But trying to start up Oracle...and getting ora-03113. Tried lowering
shmmax as far as Oracle's suggest 1gb.....DBA relinked.. but still
nothing...checked my semmaphore #'s...couldn't see any real problem
with
them, same way I always set semms....
Noticed in the ~rdbms/log/...trc file that it also shows a ora-07445.
I am open to any suggestions at this point. Wondering if I missed a
patch I need....so any
lists of patches you recommend-I'll gladly check if I've already
loaded
them. And yes I did
load the Goldpak patches from the Support CD after the cold-install.
