[HPADM] 10.20 and Ultrium LTO Drives

We are attempting to use an Ultrium 215m LTO tape drive, in an external
5300 array, on a K-Class running HP-UX 10.20. So far things haven't been
smooth. The scant documentation I've found says that the Ultrium is
supported on 10.20. I'm skeptical, because the OS became obselete last
year very soon after LTO drives were available. If they are indeed
supported, I am trying to figure out what kind of patches or black magic
will be needed to get this working.

During the machine's last window of downtime, the drive was added and
upon reboot the OS assigned to it the tape2 driver, as the ioscan shows:

# ioscan -fnC tape

Class I H/W Path Driver S/W State H/W Type Description
======================================================================
tape 0 10/0.6.0 stape SCAN DEVICE QUANTUM DLT7000
                         /dev/rmt/0m /dev/rmt/0mn /dev/rmt/c3t6d0BEST /dev/rmt/c3t6d0BESTn
                         /dev/rmt/0mb /dev/rmt/0mnb /dev/rmt/c3t6d0BESTb /dev/rmt/c3t6d0BESTnb
tape 3 10/4/4.1.0 tape2 SCAN DEVICE HP Ultrium 1-SCSI
                         /dev/diag/rmt/c8t1d0 /dev/rmt/3mn /dev/rmt/c8t1d0BESTb
                         /dev/rmt/3m /dev/rmt/3mnb /dev/rmt/c8t1d0BESTn
                         /dev/rmt/3mb /dev/rmt/c8t1d0BEST /dev/rmt/c8t1d0BESTnb
...

There are also two other tape devices connected to the system but the Ultrium is the only device on its bus.

I notice that the tape2 driver description says "DDS module", which doesn't sound right for the LTO drive. tape1 is another driver currently "out" of the kernel and its description is "HP-IB Tape Drive Driver", don't know if that's relevant or not.

The only backup method the server's admin wants to use is going through SAM/fbackup. SAM complains about the Ultrium device, saying something like "It looks like an Ultrium drive but probably will fail with backups", and sure enough it does.

I'm thinking it's a matter of getting the latest scsi tape patches, but i'm not sure what those would be. here are the current packages installed:

OnlineDiag B.10.20.24.10 HPUX 10.0 Support Tools Bundle, Dec 2001
  XSW800GR1020 B.10.20.51.2 General Release Patches for HP-UX 10.20 Servers (Dec. 2000)
XSW800HWCR1020 B.10.20.37 Extension Software Patch Bundle
  Y2K-1020S800 B.10.20.B0315 HP-UX Core OS Year 2000 Patch Bundle

I think, but am not sure, these are the most recent support bundles released for 10.20. Are these up to date?

So... questions:

Does anyone know what it takes to get an Ultrium drive working on a 10.20 machine?

Is the Ultrium really supported on 10.20 or is this wishful thinking?

Is it a matter of installing certain patches not found in the above bundles, or are there additional non-bundled patches I need to install?

Do I need to make modifications in /stand/system? Is it a driver issue where I need to somehow manually assign stape to the Ultrium drive?

Is everything fine, and this is just an unresovable SAM/fbackup issue that I won't encounter with other backup methods?

Thanks in advance! Unfortunately because of the importance of system uptime the machine cannot get a reboot until the weekend, so I'm trying to find out ahead of time what I need to do before the window of opportunity comes and goes again.

regards,
joe
