[HPADM] RE: OmniBack auto-initialize and other tape management is sues SUMMARY

The replies on this one were very mixed, both on the improvements in 4.1
over 3.5 and in the general use of auto-initialization. My response is to
continue to report this to HP as a bug and stop using auto-init in our
production environment.

Thanks to all who replied. Submitted here for your review...

Stan,
The short answer is "no". We never had any luck with it. We quit using it
at
2.55. It had a bad habit of occasionally initializing a tape that was still
protected. Instead of going into a mount request it would just grab a tape,
initialize it and off it went. In one case it did this to a tape it had
written
to the previous night. That's when you get mount requests for a tape with
no
label but does have a serial number. It assigns a new serial number when it
does
it's own initialization.
Once we had enough tapes in the rotation, we didn't have to initialize very
many.
We just used the gui and selected all the one we wanted and let it do the
rest.

Auto-initialize success...no
use initialized tapes first button...yes
Is 4.1 better at tape mgmt.....I find 4.1 not better at much of anything and
on my large hpux cell manager server I am currently holding at 3.5. On the
systems I have converted...well, I hope the the new Omni Protector (OBII new
generation..really OBII ver 5) is an improvement for what I feel 4.1 was a
waste of a good upgrade.
Just my 2 cents,
Rita

Certainly 4.10 is superior to 3.5.
Check my previous mail. with omnimm you can do almost everything.
But the control need to be with a single person, or else mount requests and
other error are bound to happen.

Hi
I always use auto-init (if the tapes are new, used tapes you must force
initialization). In 3.1 I never had problem with this (I have not used 3.5).
In 4.1 I have noticed a minor problem. The medium description will be the
pool name and a number (ex. XYZ_1, XYZ_2, XYZ_3 and so on). Sometimes two
media get the same description (but not the same Media ID). In this case I
need to change the description before labeling the tape. There is no big
risk with this, OmniBack use the Media ID, not the Media description.

I don't know if I would say 4.1 is better, as near as I can tell, it is
largely the same.
There is one notable exception; Omniback now has a "free media" pool - tapes
that are unprotected can be used by any of several pools, rather than just
stuck in one pool.
This would probably make your situation more complex, rather than simpler,
and so this might well need to be disabled for one or more of your pools.
Good luck.
