Thanks to all that sent info about this.
I have since tried several tests, and find that mailx supports
multiple addresses, both space delimited and comma delimited listings
and as several others have shown it also works in this format:
echo "test mail" | mailx -s 'test mail to me' $DISTRIBUTION_LIST
