Re: AIX Preventative maintenance

We don't run defrags routinely. In fact, I can't remember the last time I
ran a de-frag at all.

We have quite extensive monitoring in place, so we'd expect to get plenty of
advance warning of problems from that. There are a few things which get
done regularly. (I think they're all scheduled.)

Clean-up jobs of various sorts.
mkpasswd
Backups, of course.
Sundry reports on performance and also configuration - useful for DR.
Synchronising data across all our systems. (Common script directories;
/etc/hosts; security stuff.)
Clear statistics, (e.g. netstat and iostat cumulative figures). That
actually doesn't get done on all systems as it's really not very important
to us.

There are other tasks which are done from time to time, such as OS
maintenance level upgrades, but they're not really scheduled or even closely
planned in advance.

Provided you keep things tidy AIX will look after itself pretty well. The
only exception would be if you have an application with special
requirements, (e.g. to run regular de-frags on its own data).
