As stated by another member add the entry to /etc/syslog.conf and try starting. If that doesn't give anything the /usr/sbin/lpd file belongs to bos.rte.printers. You could run lppchk -v bos.rte.printers to make sure everything is OK with the installation of that fileset. You may want to checkout some of the AIX admin redbooks also. I believe one of them has pretty good section on printing related issues.

I had setup a remote printer on our AIX box but the daemon is not working..

root@beetle: # /usr/bin/lssrc -s lpd

 lpd spooler inoperative
