Hi Alix
The rmt1.* number actually refers to tape density and rewind
characteristics.
Have a look at the rmt special file.
If you do a man for rmt. The output is a collection of 3 files. The rmt
special file is towards the end of the man output.
Tape Drive Special File Characteristics
Special File Name Rewind-on-Close Retension-on-Open Bytes per Inch

The density setting is set via the tape drive characteristics.

Subject: simple tape drive question
I can't seem to find the answer on IBM.com, no matter what I look under
or search by... how do I use compression? I've got a system with all
these 0.X definitions for rmt0 and I can't find anything that tells me
what the mean.
This is the only thing I've found that's simpler in SUN's world -- using
/dev/rmt/0c compresses the backup.
