Re: IBM extends support for AIX 5.1.

I don't think it was intended to that usurious -- I
remember IBM saying that 5.1 was designed to be a
transitional OS -- to get people to AIX 5 and that
really, they wanted people to AIX 5.2.

I used to work for a business partner/software
developer and that's what the IBM repeatedly told us
and our clients. In fact, we told our clients that
they should go to AIX 5.1 as soon as possible (when it
was released) with the understanding that they should
plan to migrate to AIX 5.2 as soon as (a) it was
available and (b) their other applications would
support it.

The biggest issue driving the support extension is not
that IBM wants to be nice, but that too many apps
aren't prepped and ready for AIX 5.1, even, let alone
AIX 5.2.

The Microsoft or Oracle approach is to to drop support
without regard for your existing apps.
