This is not necessarily true since I have been able to send mail from
AIX 4.3.3 and 5.1 after a fresh install and no additional configuration.
  If there is no relay is defined sendmail.cf, the machine itself does
the MX check and attempts sending the mail directly to the mail exchanger.
