Excuse me, I think "obs=" is not valid in tar sintax.
You should use: tar Bf <block_size> /dev/rmt0 (for example)

tar -cvBf obs=0k /dev/rmt1 .
and also it's not completing - it say's 'Reached enf-of-file before completing'

yes, you can. which tar are you using? what block size did you try? i usually just set it to zero.
