I don't think the M2 drives are compatible with tapes from the 8505. I think
the only backward compatible tapes are the 20/40 Mammoth tapes...

Subject: Incompatible Tapes or drives? Exabyte vs. Maxell

Hi guru's:

Here is one I can't figure out.

I have a batch of tapes that were created on one machine that has the
following configuration:

OLD DEVICE:

rmt0 00-07-00-0,0 5.0 GB 8mm Tape Drive

      Manufacturer................EXABYTE

      Machine Type and Model......IBM-8505

      Device Specific.(Z1)........7J0A

      Part Number.................8191044

      Serial Number...............588694

      Device Specific.(LI)........00000001

      EC Level....................D48098

      FRU Number..................21H5151

      Device Specific.(Z0)........0180020283000010

When I try to read them on the new drive, I get a message in the LCD Panel

that says ILLEGAL TAPE. The new drives configuration is below.

It will read Exabyte 170m AME Tapes just fine, but the Maxell HS-8/112 tapes

Are what gives the illegal tape message!

Any ideas? What do I need to do in order to read these tapes? Thanks in
advance.

NEW DEVICE:

rmt1 40-61-00-4,0 SCSI 8mm Tape Drive (60000 MB)

        Manufacturer................EXABYTE

        Machine Type and Model......Mammoth2

        Device Specific.(Z1)........07nR

        Serial Number...............20516043

        Device Specific.(LI)........A1700295

        Part Number.................19P0692

        FRU Number..................19P0708

        EC Level....................H27309

        Device Specific.(Z0)........0180020283000030

        Device Specific.(Z3)........
