Thanks for the info. It actually turns out that the new 6xx systems
(including the 6C1 that I have) require a minimum of AIX 4.3.3-ML09;
the system that the mksysb tape was at ML-08. IBM wasn't very helpful
with a solution, and the original system is now packed in a shipping
box, so I'm going to restore the mksysb to another, spare system,
perform the ML update, recreate the mksysb, and take it from there.

This is a good heads-up for people who might be in a similar situation.
  I never even considered the possibility that the oslevel on the old
system might not be sufficient to boot the new system, even though I
was booted off of an AIX CD.

Bummer. :-)
