i need to talk to them from the dte side, not the dce side. will that still
work?

slip is part of bos.net.tcp.client ; at least sliplogin

it was used before there was ppp to connect unix-boxes (through
unix-dialin server) to the internet; thats true; but there is no direct
correlation

it should be easy to setup a simple automated login with slip to test
your modems
