Are you 'root' when you run SMIT and not when you run from the command line?
Also, check your ulimit. I don't know if SMIT does anything behind the
scenes to prevent ulimit from causing a problem.

I get:
0315-141 errpt: invalid error log entry length: 0 at offset: 180516
0315-171 Unable to process the error log file /var/adm/ras/errlog.
However, when I use SMIT, it looks OK
