Import 24,000 users

All,

I am in the early stages of planning the migration our email system from
PMDF on VMS to Sendmail on AIX. This means i will have to batch add about
24,000 users on AIX. Has anyone done this before? I'm looking for a few
pointers...

I tried a big mkuser script. But when the /etc/group line exceeds 2048,
mkusers start failing. Any workaround for this, besides having multiple
lines for the same group? Is there a way to just not add users to
/etc/group? I tinkered with /usr/lib/security/mkuser.default with no
luck.

I also tried another technique of just creating /etc/passwd manually.
Then do usrck -y ALL to create /etc/security stanza's. However this also
started failing after a few thousand users... haven't figure out why.

Any other ideas? Also can someone explain the /etc/security/.ids format
on AIX 5.1?

I am pretty experienced with Unix/AIX, but admittedly have never dealt
with this many users on one system. Any pointers/gotchas are greatly
appreciated!!

-Ray
