Thanks to everybody for their replies.
I realise you can change your settings by running smitty chgenet.
What I'm looking for is the ability to remotely run the equivalent of:
Boot server, press F1, select Utilities, select RIPL, select Config, select
OK, choose from Full Duplex or Half Duplex.

I know that on the later models its possible to update firmware remotely,
so I was wondering if its also possible to alter SMS settings.

Why do I want to do this? Because sometimes when a machine hangs and dies
and the user powers off and on, the settings within SMS manage to 'impose'
themselves on the switch port they connect to. This is if the port is set
to AutoNegotiate. If these settings are different from what has been set
using chgenet, then once the operating system comes up, you lose remote
access to the machine.

If the settings in SMS and at the operating system level are the same, then
it doesn't matter if the switch port gets over-ridden, because at least it
gets over-ridden to something that doesn't lock up the server.

The way to stop this happening is to have someone go to each machine and
change the SMS settings.
Or to have the switch port set up correctly in the first place, but thats
another issue...
But to be able to do this remotely would really help us a lot.

Thanks again for your help,

Jonathan Tansley.

you don't necesserily have to take the card offline. you can apply your
changes to database (look at smitty chgenet) and
reboot afterward. this is something you can definitely do through script.
just, you may reboot, don't you?

well, in order to change those settings, you have to take the card
offline....then change the settings, then bring it back up. Unless you
have
two cards in that box and can come in one, change the other, and vice
versa,
all you'll accomplish is to disable the network card...not exactly what you
had in mind.

Subject: Changing SMS remotely

Can anyone tell me if its possible to change SMS settings on a remote
machine?
The machines I want to change are 43P-150 and 170s. The settings I'd like
to change concern network card configuration: mediaspeed and duplex
setting.

If it is possible, I'm hoping to use it in a script, as I need to change
100+ machines.

Thanks very much,

Jonathan Tansley.
