Edward,

Thank you for that information. No, the tech was not an IBM tech, IBM no longer support AIX 3.2.5. I will forward this info to him for future reference. We ended up hiring a consultant who was able to restore their Data onsite.

Thanks again.

The statement that the mksysb only backs up rootvg is 100% correct. But that has nothing to do with being able to do an importvg of disks that are not part of rootvg as long as nothing has overwritten the data on the disks. I have imported vg's many times after restoring from a mksysb (from a completely different system) and did an importvg with no issues.

Now that a new vg1 and lv's were created, there is no way to recover the data that was on those disks.

Was the tech an IBM tech ? Is so, I would file a complaint to his/her manager.

  Edward,

I got this from my Tech who was at the customer site:

I'm sure with AIX version 3.2.5 the mksysb only backs up rootvg. This is why we would be unable to do a importvg. I have created the volume group vg1 and the particular logical volumes associated with this volume group.

  Any thoughts?

  Steve
