SUMMARY: Max disc size for an AlphaStation 255

Thanks to Tom Linden, Russ Schaefer, Olle Eriksson, James Eiler, Dr. Tom
Blinn, and William Fiore. The consensus seems to be that this will
work, with a few caveats about heat/power. In this instance, the drive
will be going into an external enclosure, so heat/power problems aren't
as big a consideration.

Here are the relevant pieces I got:

"I would be surprised if there were a limit."

"4G is max supported.
RZ29B-E is DEC or ST15150N is the seagate # I think."

"I have used SEAGATE ST318418N in several 255's without any problems. I
don't think the hardware have any special size limit other than what the
OS sets."

"The bigger disk should work. However, there could be a problem with
heat.
I've got some old AlphaStation 200 systems and have replaced the old 1GB
drives with 6 and 9 GB drives, but I was warned about the potential
thermal problems - bigger disks run hotter and could cause problems for
the disks themselves and other components in the box (CPU, memory)."

"There is nothing in the firmware or system software that's going to
care that the new drive is roughly 20 times the capacity of the old
drive. It's not a PC with some kind of BIOS limitation on drive size or
geometry (be glad it's SCSI, not ATA)."

"I can't think of a reason why it would not work"

With much appreciation,
