Max disc size for an AlphaStation 255

Hello gurus -
We have a customer who's original system disc died recently.
We've been unable to find another 1gb drive to replace it; the smallest
drive we've been able to purchase is an 18gb Seagate, ST318417N.

We don't have an AlphaStation 255 in-house to test this disc with, so I
was wondering if any of you have any experience putting larger disks in
this machine.

According to Seagate, that drive doesn't have any mechanism to limit the
drive size, unlike some drives.

According to
http://h18002.www1.hp.com/alphaserver/workstations/retired/a255_specs.ht
ml that machine will support up to 6.4gb discs.

Does anyone know if that's a "hard limit" or just the largest sized disk
that was available at the time the system was retired?

Many thanks,

---
