NFS problems across different speed networks

Fellow sysadmins,

We have a couple of Tru64 UNIX V5.1B + PK3 clusters on a Gigabit network. They are clients to three mount points/filesystems being exported by a Solaris 2.6 system.

Output of a "mount" command from one of the clients-
sunnode:/sununix1/archive/PRD on /var/cluster/members/member2/opt/archive type nfs (v3, rw, udp, hard, intr, wsize=8192, rsize=8192)
sunnode:/sununix2/vault/PRD on /var/cluster/members/member2/opt/vault type nfs (v3, rw, udp, hard, intr, wsize=8192, rsize=8192)
sunnode:/sununix2/R3arch/P01 on /var/cluster/members/member2/opt/R3arch type nfs (v3, rw, udp, hard, intr, wsize=8192, rsize=8192)

We were mounting these filesystems on our Tru64 systems using tcp and not udp but the filesystems would hang. And we would have to reboot our clients to get them fixed back again. We moved to udp and it works well now. The fixed wsize & rsize are because the Tru64 clusters (NFS clients) are on a gigabit network and the Solaris system (NFS server) is on a 100Mbs network. Now the clients don't seem to hang but the response time is terrible. We tried to change the wsize/rsize to a higher and lower number but no dice...Has anyone seen such a problem across different speed networks? If so, how did you get around it?

The interesting thing is that there are other nodes (Tru64 UNIX clients) on the 100Mbs network that don't have this problem.

Here's another output of a "mount" command from just such a node...

sunnode:/sununix1/archive/PRD on /var/opt/archive type nfs (v3, rw, udp, hard, intr)
sunnode:/sununix2/vault/PRD on /var/opt/vault type nfs (v3, rw, udp, hard, intr)
sunnode:/sununix2/R3arch/R01 on /var/opt/R3arch type nfs (v3, rw, udp, hard, intr)

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Tks & Rgds,

Alay Shah
