Best way to determine real error

I have an old Alpha 2100 on a remote site. It has crashed with the
following message:

======================================================================

Formatted Message:
    CPU machine check/exception - CPU 0

Event Data Items:
    Event Name : sys.unix.binlog.hw.machine_check._savecore.True
    Priority : 700
    PID : 469
    PPID : 1
    Event Id : 36
    Timestamp : 19-Apr-2004 09:44:17
    Host IP address : 192.168.170.14
    Host Name : lon-mk2
    User Name : root
    Format : CPU machine check/exception - CPU $subid_num
    Reference : cat:evmexp.cat:300

Variable Items:
    subid_class (INT32) = 100
    subid_num (INT32) = 0
    subid_unit_num (INT32) = 0
    subid_type (INT32) = 1
    binlog_event (OPAQUE) = [OPAQUE VALUE: 1200 bytes]
    _savecore (BOOLEAN) = True

============================ Translation =============================
binlogshow: DECevent is not available on this system.
binlogshow: DECevent is required to translate old-format events.
======================================================================

How do I determine the real error. From everything I can see in the
crash dumps, etc. it looks like the CPU 0 is failing but is there
something else that can cause this error?
