SUMMARY: Question about very strange routing problem

I had asked about a server that shared a common net with 7 others, could
talk to 3 of the others but not the other 4. Routing was consistent,
arps were finding correct MAC addresses on all systems, packets flowed
in the right interface but were sent out the default route, as if it
couldn't find the sender's location.

A number of people responded, huge thanks to you all.

Several people suggested looking for vlans on the switch or router,
which we did examine. It was suggested I check DNS and reverse lookups -
this did uncover a problem, but not the root cause. Others suggested
checking for routed and gated options, but they are not running.
One interesting suggestion was to try adding a host-based route - didn't
help, however.

The suggestion that came closest to the fix was to try rebooting the
switch or router. What actually fixed the problem, however, was
completely unconfiguring/reconfiguring the server interface. A simple
down/up didn't do it - I had to completely remove the definition of the
interface and down it, then redefine it. There was nothing bogus about
the definition, we brought it up the same as it was before, but somehow
this gave a "kick" to the interface which straightened it out, and it's
now working. Just like so many computer problems, in the end
power-cycling it, or the equivalent, is the final solution!

Thanks again!
