We've been using Veritas NetBackup Datacenter v4.5 on Tru64 for the past
three or so years. Absolutely no problems. We ran our master server on a
DS20 for the first year, but moved it to Linux in the second year -- it
turns out that platform price was better on the Linux box -- but still run
the client piece on several 5.1a boxes.

I'm using Netbackup on V4.0G, V5.1, V5.1A, and V5.1B servers, some as
network clients and some as SAN-storage-node servers. My master server is a
DS10 running V5.1A. I'm also backing up a number of Windows servers with
this arrangement as well.

As long as the hardware is working, it works fine. I even modified a Tru64
installation disk to have a Netbackup client on it plus some scripts for a
bare metal restore CD.

Hi,
It is such a smooth operation. If you have done it with other OS, it is
exactly the same (commands and syntax).

I've used it and it works fine. Only caveat I can think of is If you're
using the java management console (jnbSA or jbpSA) from Tru64, it might not
display properly in an Xwindows desktop on, say, Solaris or AIX. Seems the
Java implementation on Tru64 is proprietary. (surprise, surprise)

I've used Netbackup, Legato, Syncsort BackupExpress, and a number of other
solutions and I much prefer Veritas Netbackup.

I have been using NetBackup for a couple of years, started with 3.4. I have
an HSG80 based SAN, a Compaq ESL9198 tape library (w/40-80 drives), and
backup 40 clients (Tru64 4.0e, 5.1, 5.1a, 5.1b, WinNT, Win2K, WinXP) with a
total of about 750G across all clients.

I use a DS10 6/600 as the Master Media Server and no other Media Servers.
The DS10 has two fibre HBA's and four NIC ports.

The first problems that I ran into where network related, trying to pump
enough data through the Media Server(s) to keep the tape drives streaming.
I used a WinNT and a Tru64 Media Servers for a while, but then you have
tapes that can only be used with one Media Server or the other, but not both
(this should be fixed in V5.0 where all expired media returns to Scratch).
I played with Multiplexing, but restores got ugly. I ended up making two
Link Aggregate Groups (LAG) on the DS10, on separate subnets.

Then, as I ramped up more clients, I found I was taking too long to complete
some critical clients, so I added four drives to the library (for a total of
eight). This helped, but I still had to do a lot of work to keep things
scheduled just right. I also didn't have Vaults so I wasn't making off-site
copies very efficiently, Veritas allowed me to exchange some excess Media
Server licenses for Vault (it took a year, but...)

After cleaning up my SAN, I found that if I took all of the scraps of unused
disk and put them into a single ADVFS filesystem, on the DS01, I came up
with close to 1TB of disk space. So, I started experimenting with backing
up to disk on the DS10.

I now backup everything to disk, then use Vault to make two tape copies
(on-site & off-site).

I do full backups on Saturday (starting @ 00:30) with everything completing
well before 23:00 when I start the Vault job. This make everything occur on
Saturday, so it's easier to specify Weekly vs. Monthly vs. Yearly which get
retained for 1 month, 1 year, and 7 years, respectively. These are
averaging 740GB.

Mon-Thu I do Cumulative Incremental (Friday bleeds into Saturday and messes
up the Fulls). These run from 20:00 to 02:00, File Servers go first so I
have all of the bandwidth available to do the databases (cold backups)
between 00:00 - 02:00. I should mention that the File Server starting at
20:00 is WinNT on a Proliant 5500 w/100GB of disk, the system bus must be
slower than the ethernet (it will be retired soon). At 02:00 the Vault job
starts and completes by 07:30, usually. If there are problems I have until
noon before Iron Mountain picks up.

Now I am working on Disaster recovery. I haven't seen much from Veritas,
only how to resurrect your Master Server (using the same name and such).
But, I have successfully installed NetBackup on an AS800 and used a
stand-alone tape drive to restore the NetBackup database. I just need to
verify that things are working the way I think they are (it failed once and
then worked with no problems), I'll probably rebuild the 800 from scratch
and see how it works again, and again.
