too many open files error

Im running Tru64 5.1b on an ES40. After applying pk3 I started
receiving this error "too many open files" when doing a find as root. I
checked the archives and some mentioned increasing max_users but when I
looked it is set to 4096 so I dont think that is the problem. I did a
ulimit and see the following :

# ulimit -a
time(seconds) unlimited
file(blocks) unlimited
data(kbytes) 131072
stack(kbytes) 8192
memory(kbytes) 2029784
coredump(blocks) 0
nofiles(descriptors) 4096
vmemory(kbytes) 4194304
#

Any ideas what needs to be tuned to get this to work as expected?
