SUMMARY: Best Practices--Retiring HSZ70's

Thanks to my sole responder, Dr. Alan Rollow. I was
not planning to replace the cards with anything else,
simply taking them out. I have the thought that
physically taking them out, and building a kernel that
does not have drivers for them (thus lighter) is a
better idea.
But depending on how much i have to put up with, maybe
i will follow his advice is simply leave them in
place, even though I am not using them.

First, ask yourself the question... Do I need to
remove
the SCSI adapters to which the HSZ70s were connected?

If the answer is "no", then you're done. With
nothing
on the bus, there isn't much need to worry about
them.
I don't know whether you need to put terminators on
the
host side connectors. I generally haven't and not
had
        any problems.

If you need the PCI slots, wait until you have the
new
adapters you're putting in those slots and replace
them
then. If you don't know what you're doing, get
someone
who does. It isn't hard, but a little experience
makes
it pretty easy and no experience puts the new and old
adapters at some risk. How to swap PCI adapters may
be
documented in the system user guide and is likely
documented in the installation guide for the new
adapters.

Getting into the 4100 is probably documented in its
        installation or user's guide.

If you're just removing the old adapters, you'll want
to find replacement PCI slot covers. They help
reduce
the RFI emissions of the system.

If you're running V4 or earlier and want to remove
the
drivers and data structures for the SCSI adapters,
just
boot the generic kernel after physically removing the
adapters and build a new kernel. That's probably
documented
in the guide to system configuration. But, as I said
before,
unless you need the slots for something else, or the
adapters
somewhere else, you might as leave them in. They
could come
        in handy in the future.

On V5, you can probably do the same, but if there is
another
adapter of that type being used for something else,
there
probably isn't much point. I believe drivers are
loaded
for whatever adapters are present and recognized.
