Thanks to those who responded: Steve Herber and Dr Thomas Blinn.

This has been tried before (by Steve) whose attempt was frustrated by a binary program is used for dependency checking during the installation (I assume there are several such programs used in /usr/lbin).
Steve resorted to a more manual procedure of installing the base system and then running scripts that install local software and bring the system up to the latest patch level.

Dr Blinn mentioned that to make this work, one needs to fulfil quite a number of prerequisites:
- bootp extensions in the bootp server
- to understand the EXACT mechanism how the RIS utility sets up bootptab
- tftp shadow links in the root so that the tftpd will do things right
- etc...?

Even if one gets these things right, it may still be that a stumbling block in the form of non-portable binary programs exists.

That´s why I am now contemplating the same route that Steve went: Install the base system manually, and then bring up the rest from network server using custom scripts.
