XCLONE OPENS UP IN VERSION 2.4
You can now choose your own configuration files to describe and manage clone processes, and tell XClone what to change in those files. Now, you can use XClone to clone any application that runs on an Oracle database, and create your own XClone plugins.
This builds upon XClone's existing benefits:
- 100% Automation of Oracle database and application clones and refreshes.
- Hot Cloning - create clones while your database is still in use.
- Network Cloning - create clones across your network.
- Hybrid Cloning - save space and time by cloning and linking new databases to existing apps.
- Scheduled Cloning - clone at the press of a button, or schedule for more convenient times.
- Rebuild Clones - re-create clones from existing clones; ideal for clones that need to be repeated regularly.
- Backup Datafiles - now available to all users with access to an XClone client.
- Integration with TOAD - call XClone from within your TOAD environment.
- Motif user interface - now use XClone on your UNIX client, as well as Windows.
INDEPENDENT ANALYST REPORT ON CLONING ORACLE DATABASES AND APPS

The January 22, 2003 edition included a report on EMC's TimeFinder solution, under the heading 'Oracle 11i application cloning gets the automation treatment'. Here's an extract from that report:
"[EMC and Oracle] have issued a 'best practices' blueprint that guides users through the process of creating non disruptive copies of 11i. It's largely an API swap, although new Oracle utilities integrated into TimeFinder are also involved. The two claim to have 'automated a tedious, error-prone process for customers.' But they don't appear to have gone as far down the automation route as new startup Babboo, whose Java-based XClone product is a graphical tool for doing the same task but without the need to involve expensive storage arrays ...
"Cloning can be a major part of a database administrator's load. Until now, it has been largely a manual and error-prone process. It's ripe for automation. The surprising thing is that it hasn't been done sooner. Startup Babboo's XClone product looks as if it's gone further down the automation route than EMC and Oracle themselves."
