`No OpenGL extension on display' error when there is

Any suggestions why I might get `No OpenGL extension on display' from
gl_ivp (and OpenGL programs generally) on a system where xdpyinfo
shows that the GLX extension is actually present? This is running to
the console on a 5.1B system with PowerStorm 300. I tried a reinstall
of the 3X0 packages plus reboot to no effect. Supposedly-identical
systems work OK.
