SUMMARY: Question about power required for 9/18/36GB SBB disks

I asked about the ability of the old tan BA356-RA enclosures to hold 18
and
36GB disks. I received a number of very quick, helpful responses, as
usual -
thanks to those who replied!!!

Chris Ruhnke noted that he has 6x9GB running in the old BA356 shelf with
150W power supplies, but that when he purchased 6x18GB they came with
the blue 180W power supplies

Dr. Tom Blinn comments:
You don't want to do this. The old enclosures are junk as far as the
new disks go... As for the power, it's both the power and the cooling
that matter. The newer shelves have better cooling as well as more power
in the dual 180w power supplies. Without the better cooling, the newer
faster hotter disks can cook themselves in the old enclosures, and a
cooked disk doesn't work very reliably if at all.

Jeff Hummell provides a side note about what *not* to do:
I do know for certain that you cannot have more than 6 of the 10k rpm
drives with only one power supply in the "top gun blue" shelves. If you
do, at some point, the bus will reset and all the drives will go into an
error condition that requires you to remove and reapply power to the
shelf (it happened to us twice before Compaq created a technote for
service people and added it to the documentation for the drives).

Frank Chu-Cheong sent a user's guide for the BA356, with power info -
thanks!

Thanks again. I'm going to tell the users they'll have to bite the
bullet
and buy or steal a blue enclosure to do this.

Regards,

Judith Reed
