SUMMARY: DS10L Disk Problem

First, I must thank Thomas Blinn, Pat O'Brien and Robert Willis for their
helpful answers. The problem was solved accidentally and is described
below after the original question.

The problem appears to be connected to the cdrom drive that was being
used to boot the operating system. The cd drive was borrowed from a DEC Personal
Workstation. For reasons of convenience, I decided to try the boot using a
CD drive from an old Dell PC. To my surprise, the boot errors described above
did not occur and the boot completed successfully. I find this solution to be
rather peculiar. The CD is not damaged. The cables did not seem to have anything
to do with the problem since many different cables were used, always leading to
the same result. Has anyone seen this problem before? Many thanks.
