SUMMARY: Printer Auditing.

Couple of good pointers,

Firstly SNMP,

If you only need to know how many pages are printed on a HP LaserJet
(not who printed what etc), the easiest way would probably be to ask the
printer itself via SNMP. I believe that the OID you are looking for is
1.3.6.1.2.1.43.10.2.1.4.1.1.
You can then query it using (for example)
  snmp_request <printer IP> public get 1.3.6.1.2.1.43.10.2.1.4.1.1
or some other tool for sending SNMP queries.

Otherwise, I think you want to take a look at the 'af' entry in
/etc/printcap.

Hope this is of any help, and good luck!

And also several people suggested http://www.lprng.org/

Which is an lp replacement which includes a filter for getting such info.
This would have been my chosen route, but unfortunately I have been
unable to download and untar / gzip the install files.

I will probably look at the SNMP idea in more detail, but in the mean
time I have hooked something into the database (Universe) print driver
which will be adequate for now.

Thanks for the responses.

Bryan Mills.

Does anyone know of a print auditing solution for TRU64 ? I need to be
able to count the number of pages being printed to each of the printers
within the company All printers are network enabled HP Laserjets.
Printing via windows is not an option.

Thanks,

Bryan Mills.
