Thanks to Navneet Verma, James Sainsbury, Lucien HERCAUD, and Bluejay
Adametz for their suggestions and experiences. Excerpts from their
suggestions follow:

1. Backup Cluster database
2. Delete cluster member
3. Delete ASE subset
4. Upgrade Firmware (optional)
5. Upgrade OS
6. Install ASE subset and configure
7. Reacquire Cluster Member.

One thing to note is that you lose display postscript (dps) which
could be a problem or not.
We upgraded a workstation to 4.0g and found that a computational
fluid dynamics package used framemaker and dps for much of its
graphical output. The solution was to extract the required files from
the 4.0F software sets and reinstall/repackage them under /usr/opt/.
======================================
It will also require you to UNINSTALL all the 4.0F Patches before doing
that.
Personnaly, I advise you to uninstall ASE as well (make sure you save the
asecdb -ASE database- from /var/ase/...)
After the system upgrade, you can can reinstall ASE 1.6 and then the latest
patch level for 40G. Copy the asecdb database in its location and then
'voila !'
======================================
Of course, do a good backup. Or three (our practice is to have three ways to
get the system back the way it was). If you have a spare machine you can
test the process on, I've found that to be useful, even if the test machine
isn't anything like the real one. Just going through the motions in a
so-what-if-I-break-it environment adds a lot of confidence to the procedure.

If the upgrade is anything less than routine, I'll post an update.

[Original Question]
Dear Universe,

I've been asked to upgrade a pair of 4100's running V4.0F and ASE 1.6 to
Tru64 V4.0G, in order to support a ClearCase server upgrade. I've not
dealt with any of the TruCluster software upgrades in the past, and haven't
been able to find anything specific on the DEC/Compaq/HP support site. The
supported versions table (at
http://h18005.www1.hp.com/services/software/ss_pvs_se_amap.html) indicates
that 1.6 is still the supported version for V4.0G...is it sufficient to
upgrade the OS in single-user mode, and then reboot into ASE?

Any advice, pointers, hints or suggestions welcome.

Dan
