Thanks for the wealth of replies that were all helpful.

The dd command extracted the file from the tape but.........
 
After I managed to extract the file from the dat I believed it was corrupt
as the software image would load from the load host to the decserver but
the software would not initialize. After speaking to a very helpful guy at
compaq/dec/hp?? he sent me the software versions wweng1 and 2 via e-mail
but the problem still persisted. A factory reset of the dec server cured
this problem and we now have two of them up and running.

The files are now backed up on Dat with FULL INSTRUCTIONS enclosed on how
to extract them!!
