Paul Sand of the University of New Hampshire wrote back the following in
what's probably a record response time:

Sure enough, after only a few minutes of experimenting with scu, I'm
once again able to use my media changer! :-) (there was much
rejoicing!) I'd still like to know what it is I'm missing in order to
use mcutil, but I'm extremely grateful to Paul for what amounts to a
very usable work-around.

For what it's worth, some of my commands have changed as follows (this
is all done in a script, so it's really a one-time change:

--- mcutil -e s: d: ...
+++ scu -f /dev/changer/mc0 show elements ...

--- mcutil -m d:0 s:0
+++ scu -f /dev/changer/mc0 move medium source 16 destination 256

--- mcutil -m s:1 d:0
+++ scu -f /dev/changer/mc0 move medium source 257 destination 16

The only other change was to the rather simple math that works out tape
slot numbers (we now have an offset of 256) and the drive number goes
from a static "d:0" to a static "16".

That's about as simple a work-around as one can imagine, (the
work-around I'd implemented to get operators to manually switch tapes
from the changer's front panel wasn't this simple!)

Once again, thanks Paul, and thanks to anyone who can help get mcutil
working again.
