Well,

I got several responses.

Hpaq supports a 36gig drive in the RA8000.
Hpaq doesn't support anything larger in that cabinet.

Hpaq supports a 72gig drive in the MA8000.
Hpaq doesn't support anything larger in that cabinet.

There is a 72 gig drive available in an SBB, a DS-RZ1GC-VW, $1500.
This is not supported by Hpaq in the RA8000.

One brave soul, has removed the smaller drive from an SBB and replaced them
with 180gig Seagate drives and is running quite happily with them for
several months in an RA8000.

For me, It is necessary to go the unsupported route. I'll probably get a
couple of seagate 180/7200rpm or ibm 140gig/10krpm drives ($1000each), test
them out on various configurations and deploy them as necessary. I'll be
relying on the raid controllers and good backups to provide the support I
need.

Thanks to all who responded!

I have several HSG80/RA8000 storage systems. I am running
Tru64/4.0G/5.1A/Openvms7.2-1/AIX4.3/NT4.0 connected to these devices via SAN
Fabric/Fibre Arbitrated loop. The 36gig drives I'm using are not keeping
up with the growth.

Are there plans to support 72/144gig drives?

I've cracked open the plastic SBB modules and replaced some of our
old 9 gig drives with 36gig ibm sca drives with great success (unsupported).
If I have to, I'll buy a couple of 72/144gig sca drives and test them out.
